South Bend Metro Area Guide

South Bend is located in Northern Indiana and is part of the region known as, “Michiana.” Michiana is a term used to describe the area of people who live in Northern Indiana and Southern Michigan and commute to St. Joseph’s County for work. The entire area is built around the St. Joseph’s river and is populated largely by students at the University of Notre Dame. This city’s roots began in fur trading and in the mid-1800’s the city moved towards industrialization. Manufacturing plants such as Studebaker and Singer Sewing Company were instrumental in the city’s success. This rich history is honored today by The Center for History, which is a museum comprised of the history of the St. Joseph River Valley, the University of Notre Dame, the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League and a children’s museum. The Studebaker National Museum which displays a large collection of wagons and automobiles is also located in South Bend.  The collection includes the carriages of Presidents Lincoln, McKinley, Harrison and Grant.

In South Bend there is a large following of the arts. The Morris Performing Arts Center and the South Bend Civic Theatre are just a couple of the places you can go around town to catch a show. With the University of Notre Dame located in the area, citizens of South Bend are able to take advantage of the entertainment that surrounds the campus. The Fighting Irish compete in many sports events are recognized for both their football and basketball programs.

If you are interested local recreation you can head down to the Potawatomi Zoo, which is the oldest zoo in Indiana. You can also catch a minor league baseball South Bend Silver Hawks game at Coveleski Stadium or go for ride down the East Race Waterway, which was the first man made white water rapids facility in the United States.
